On 22 August, the Asociación de Pilotos de Líneas Aéreas (APLA) received confirmation from the Argentine Civil Aviation Authority that full radar coverage has been re established in the Buenos Aires (Baires) TMA (See IFALPA Safety Bulletin 08SAB01). Even so, in an effort to enhance safety the Asociación de Pilotos de Líneas Aéreas (APLA) together with the Argentine air traffic controllers association (ACTA) is recommending that all pilots operating with in in the TMA comply with the following procedures:
  • All clearances will follow the published Standard Instrument Departures (SIDs) and Standard Terminal Arrivals (STARs) for airports within the TMA.
  • Both ATC and pilots will only use ICAO standard phraseology in radio communications.
  • Clearance to enter the TMA will only be granted to aircraft with a fully functioning TCAS.
APLA advises that Aerolíneas Argentinas, LAN Argentina and the Uruguayan airline PLUNA have agreed to amend their company procedures to bring them into line with the above recommendations.
